Barban

Barban is a charming historical municipality in Istria nestled on a plateau that separates the Labin and Pula-Pola regions.

Steeped in history, this ancient settlement dates back to the Roman era, when it served as a strategic hill-fort. With its commanding position, Barban once dominated the surrounding valley and controlled the crucial bridge over the Raša River.

Over time, Barban evolved into a fortified stronghold, complete with round and square towers, defensive walls, and imposing town gates, along with a central citadel. In 1535, the village was acquired by the Venetian noble Loredan family, who transformed Barban by constructing a palace and the parish church of St. Nicholas. The influence of the Loredans is still visible today, as their legacy lives on through these architectural gems. Just outside the main gates, you’ll find the quaint 15th-century stone church of St. Anthony the Monk, adorned with beautiful frescoes inside.

Today, Barban is not only a place of historical significance but also a vibrant cultural hub. It is famous for the knightly game Trka na prstenac (Tilting at the Ring), a thrilling medieval competition. The village also hosts popular festivities like the Feast of Wine and the Fig Festival, where you can savor local flavors and immerse yourself in Istrian traditions.

Discover Barban, where history, culture, and community come together in a picturesque setting.
